Today I'm going to break down Odell Beckham Jr's non-contact knee injury in Super Bowl 56.

My name is Stephen Dunn. I'm a holistic physical therapist and I've been helping people with injuries since 1998.

I’ve had experience helping people from the professional football rankings rehabbing their ACL injuries in the past and it's a pretty fun group of people to work with. So with that said let's go to it and let's break down this non-contact injury to Odell Beckham Jr. I'm going to speculate it is another ACL injury.

So let's share my screen and let's watch the play...

It's a non-contact injury. No one touched him. He caught the ball, didn't even plant or cut and just stepped and what looked like a little shift or a pivot in his knee is why I'm going to speculate its an ACL tear He tore this ACL on this same knee in the past and has rehabilitated back from it.

So here we're going to watch it... catch, boom... he didn't really catch it actually. I'm sorry Odell.

I will say geaux tigers, I'm an LSU fan so I was rooting for quite a few of the tigers tonight. The beautiful thing is Odell caught the first touchdown pass of the game. He was having a great start to the game when this injury happened.

Let's talk about the injury.

I think Odell tore his ACL. He's torn it before on that side, has rehabilitated, and come back to play at an extremely high level. Rehabilitating it for the second time, if it is a torn ACL again, will be a bit more of a challenge to do.

He can do it and come back and play at a high level but I'm grateful he won that super bowl. I’m thankful that he got it because you know at this point in his career he may or may not want to go through the routine of coming back and rehabilitating and getting back.

So again, a non-contact injury during the super bowl. Odell Beckham was set up to catch a pass while he's just running, the knee shifts, and he's injured. He’s out for the rest of the game.

The Rams come back and win with about a minute and a half to play. It was quite an exciting game and that's what we got for you today.

Y'all take care and have a fantastic week after the super bowl.

All right, bye now.

Hi everyone. This is Andy from CORE. Since Chinese New Year is around the corner I would like to spend a little bit of time introduce that to you guys and also wish you guys a happy new year.

So traditionally Chinese people follow the lunar calendar and usually around late January, early February time is when the Chinese new year falls into. It's a very festive time for families to gather together and catch up and share meals and then that's probably one of my favorite holidays.

If you are a CORE client that has been coming here regularly you might have been noticing some of the paintings we hang at the back studio but then you might not know what those mean. So I would like to also spend a little bit time explaining that to you guys so that you guys would have a better understanding what those are.

So on the first one you can see huang jin wan liang... it means 10 000 pieces of gold nuggets. It's a symbol of bringing in good fortune and luck.

On the second one, you can see 招財進寶 (zhao tsai jin bao) in a combination form which means bringing in good fortune and at the bottom you can see julie tranjat fugue pinghan still means bringing peace and good fortune to you and your family.

On the third one you can see the letter fu.

Fu means good fortune. Sometimes traditionally you can see people hanging this upside down like this to get the meaning of trying to get good fortune to come to our way but at CORE we wanted to put it the way it should be, instead of upside down because we certainly want good fortune to come our way but then we also want to acknowledge the support and the good fortune we already have.

Especially for you guys that has been consistently supporting us for the past two years. So with this being said we are very grateful for the support from all of you guys and we will be here to continuously serve you. To help you get more active, fit and return to things you enjoy.

Lastly I want to say gomshi fatsai shin and kailu... happy new year to all of you guys. Have a great day.

Many of my patients ask me about my life away from the clinic and helping patients with back pain. Seeing live music is always an answer! For me, the live music bug started a long time ago.

It was a hot and muggy night in New Orleans in 1985, and I was on my way to the Superdome with a few friends…

Prince came out and blew my pre-teen mind. That was it…I was hooked to live music, but more importantly, good live music. Next it was New Edition in Baton Rouge. Then Metallica and Guns n Roses got huge and were touring to sold out shows in the area.

The rap scene was taking over New Orleans and I was catching LL Cool J, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Too Short, and so many more all over NOLA.

During the 90’s, the first 2 lollapalooza bridged the rap and alternative grunge worlds for me.

I was introduced to Nine Inch Nails after a set by Ice T. Violent Femmes, Fishbone, Living Colour and Janes Addiction were really fun from the first year, 1991. The next year was even better… Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, Rage, Tool, Cypress Hill, House of Pain and so many more that I can’t recall.

Then the grunge sound took over through the college and physical therapy school years.

Living in NOLA for PT school was amazing for live music. The funky Meters, Dr John, Fats Domino and Ray Charles were the highlights from Jazz Fest. The big easy has its own musical style and it also attracts national bands.

I was able to see George Clinton and P Funk, G Love, Widespread Panic, Pink Floyd, U2 and many, many more. It was a great time to see live music. My favorite venues: Tipitina’s, House of Blues, and any stage on Jazz Fest.

Then the move to LA and yeah, live music is pretty huge there as well. However, LA had those huge acts and those names that many do not know stop in to play The Hollywood Bowl, The Greek and my favorite, The Wiltern.

I saw ton’s of great shows at those venues, from Ben Harper to Dr John at the Hollywood Bowl. Trey Anastasio Band, The Allman Brothers, The Cranberries and Rusted Root put on an incredible shows at the Greek and Widespread Panic and String Cheese Incident shook the top floor of the Wiltern, literally!

Next was the move across country to the Live Music Capitol of the World, Austin, Texas… And all of that to lead up to the top 3 music venues in Austin , from a music nerds perspective.

Top 3 Music Venues in Austin, Texas

#3 Stubb’s

A slanted outdoor amphitheater in downtown Austin, Stubb’s can be a back killer. Yes, the physical therapist comes out in me when I think of standing or dancing on a slanted ground for a concert. Get there early and get a spot next to the soundboard on the wooden deck.

There is also level ground in the VIP area in the back of the venue. The Black Pumas, My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk, Robert Earl Keen, Ryan Bingham and Korn are some of the acts that I have seen at Stubb’s.

#2 The Paramount Theatre

It is like stepping back in time with the old school, ornate vibe of the Paramount on Congress Street. The seats are small and leg room is limited for those over 6 feet tall. My first show was Iron & Wine for a fundraiser for midwives.

Sam Beam and an acoustic guitar was an incredible introduction to the amazing sound The Paramount delivers. I was lucky enough to catch his fundraiser 3-4 times and I went from the last row the first show (buying ticket last minute) to the front few rows for every future show.

Gary Clark Jr. played a solo show that was absolutely incredible. Dr John, The John Butler Trio, John McLaughlin & Jimmy Herring, Delbert McClinton, and Sheryl Crow all put on great shows over the years.

#1 ACL Live, The Moody Theatre

From my first show watching Willie Nelson on opening night to The Trey Anastasio Band as my last pre-Covid show, ACL Live does not disappoint. It is new and modern and the complete opposite vibe of The Paramount.

The sound is great and every seat in the house is fairly close to the stage. I love to catch a show from the Mezzanine level. Highlights at The Moody include Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, The Waylon Jennings Tribute, Chris Stapleton, Bob Weir, Lyle Lovett, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Mark Knopfler to name a few.

If you get a chance to catch a taping for PBS - ACL live, do it!. The tapings that I’ve seen include Ben Harper, Jim James, Widespread Panic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Grupo Fantasma, Steve Earl, Jack White and Patty Griffin.

And there you have it… My top 3 Music Venue’s in Austin, Texas

Thanks for reading/watching and reach out if you are struggling with back pain… 512.215.4227

Hey CORE family… what’s up? It’s Stephen Dunn. I just wanted to go over something really quick. This is a topic that gets really hot every year on Super Bowl. An article typically comes out the few days after the Super Bowl talking about the starters and how many of them played certain positions or certain sports in high school. How many sports they each played and the topic is sports specialization and many, many people think for their quarter… their kid or for the athlete to be the next, like great quarterback. Or the next great pitcher or the great this or that or the other… They need to specialize in it and do it from the time they’re a young age.

Well the research suggests that that’s not good. It actually ends up causing burnout, which was one major problem. It also causes severe overuse injuries.

So let’s talk about the quarterback for Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes. He’s the spitting example of why you should not specialize in any sport! Why?

Okay, he’s pretty amazing at quarterback, right? Well let’s talk about him, he’s an amazing athlete and by him being an amazing athlete he is pulled from everything he is played from the time he was a young kid. Now when he was in high school… We are talking about Patrick Mahomes the quarterback of Kansas City, when he was in high school he was the quarterback on the football team, he was the starting point guard on the basketball team and he was the starting pitcher on the baseball team.

So the reason I bring that up is but and he was good at all of them… and from the numbers that I read is that he was really good and he probably could have picked any of those sports and went on and made a living playing any of those three sports. But what he did is he chose football and by choosing football he actually chose to be an athlete playing football. So when he watched him play the way he does things it’s just it’s the combination of all those sports and that’s why he’s doing so fantastic.

He’ll throw passes like this, he’ll throw passes at the sidearm. Well that’s his pitching experience in high school. When he’s running the ball he can shake in juke anybody… that’s being a point guard on the basketball team, right? Whenever he also does something that not many people do in football is a no-look pass. Well he’s looking this way but he’s passing that way and in basketball that’s a very common thing as a point guard to have a no-look pass. In football he’s obviously pretty spectacular. So my point is if you have a child, if you have someone that you know and that you care about and they’re really interested in specializing in one sport or if coaches are pushing you to specialize in one sport… all the research suggests that that’s not recommended. Whether again that’s any sport, it doesn’t matter which one, that it’s just not recommended. When I was a kid we couldn’t play sports all year. We played baseball and then football and then basketball. If we wanted to play soccer or track of course those were options and other sports are options too.

We didn’t have the option to play one sport year-round, so that’s my message for today. Really consider it not specializing in one sport, playing all sports and the Super Bowl is a great example every year of that.

So that’s my message for today, if you have any questions or comments hit them below. If got a question for me and want to call the office… 512.215.4227. I’d love to hear your take on this and what you think about the sports specialization in our modern culture in sports.

Jase had a great idea a few weeks ago in our team meeting… Lets go decorate a tree on 360 as a team. And after a few moments of discussing, a plan was born.

Jase went out to scout a tree a few days prior and then half of the team met on a gorgeous sunny day to decorate. We tied the ornaments down very well so they stay put in the wind.

We laughed as we showed the team this video and told them that the crew that didn’t hang the decorations will be required to go take it down. We will make sure to get each ornament picked up and gathered after the holiday break…

A fresh snake skin a few feet away from our tree had us on high alert…

HAPPY HOLIDAYS…

Hey guys, what’s up? It’s Stephen Dunn with CORE Therapy and Pilates. Today for Mindful Movement Monday, we have Megan teaching a class. What you need is a foam roller, so get your foam roller out.

Tonight, we’re just going to work on the upper body, some drastic lengthening and rotation. I’m already going to go ahead and get down on our mats. We’re going to take that foam roller, we’re going to lay it across the back, and it’s going to go right about mid back.

So if you’re a woman, you’re probably going to go right along that bra line. We’re going to take our hands and we’re going to interlace our fingers and rest them up underneath supporting the neck. Take a moment and lift with your neck supported.

Let the upper body lengthen over the top of that foam roller, taking some nice deep breaths here. On your next exhale, we’re going to push the center of the shoulder blades down into that foam roller and curl up to look at our belly button.

Then as we inhale, we’re going to keep that neck supported and lengthen out over the top of that foam roller again. We’re going to do this about five times, gently exhaling.

Pressing that mid back into that foam roller as we curl up looking at the belly button again, keeping the neck supported and trying to keep the neck away from doing all of this work. You’re engaging into those lats to help bring you up. We’ll do about one more through the center.

We’re going to go ahead and lengthen over the top of that foam roller again. On the next one we are going to curl up and we’re going to look down at our left hip pocket.

So we’re going to curl up almost like you’re going to go take a look right at the side of your belly. Then we’re going to inhale, lengthen out, centered over the foam roller.

Now exhale, we’re going to curl up looking at the opposite side, trying to gently start working that spine and some different plans. We’ll do about one more on each side.

After we get finished with that, we’re going to take that foam roll and we’re going to get rid of it. So after you come up off of the foam roller, you can let it rest to the side. Then we are going to the next position.

We’re going to get into child’s pose. You can have those feet together, knees apart. We’re going to lay down and stretch open, trying to reach our fingertips down towards the end of the mat.

Once you find a nice comfortable position here, we’re going to take an inhale into the ribs. As we exhale, we’re going to try to walk those fingertips out towards the end of the mat.

A little bit more on your next inhale, nice big breath into the ribs and to the low back. Again exhaling, walking those fingers upset a little bit further on the next inhale.

Let’s take this fingertips and start walking them over to the right hand side of the mat. Now we’re getting really long on that left side body. When you get here, I want you to take a nice deep breath into that left, rip. Exhale, try to walk those fingers, hips a little bit deeper.

Taking one more inhale and exhale in this place. Again, trying to lengthen up through that body. Then we’re going to start walking the fingers, hips, reaching for the end of the mat as we go through the center.

Then we’re going to walk over to the left side of the mat, taking a nice deep breath into that right side. Rip and exhale and walking those fingers heads just slightly deeper. Good, one more inhale and exhale here.

On that exhale, find a release through the rib cage. Find the release through the low back. Then we’re going to start walking ourselves back towards the center. Again, lengthening out during this whole entire process.

When you get back to the center, nice deep breath here, inhale. Exhale. Let’s go one more fingertip out. Then we’re going to slowly roll up out of this position.

When we get up to see that we want to have that spine set nice and tall. We’re going to go on to the hands and knees now. So we’re going to be up onto quadruped head. The next thing we’re going to do is we’re going to go into thread and kneel.

Let’s start by taking that right hand. We’re going to reach underneath the left arm and you can do less if you can make it down to the right shoulder. We’re just going to rest there, finding a little bit of tape rotation, then go as far as you’re comfortable.

As you’ll see, we’ve got people in all different kinds of areas right here. Once we get there, nice and gentle, deep breaths to help release and open up through that body. One more in here, and on the next exhale, we’re going to come back to center.

Now we’re going to pick that left hand. We’re going to thread that left hand underneath, trying to reach away from the body as we go into that rotation. Using that breath, letting the exhales decompress the spine.

We’ll do one more in half, and on the exhale, we will go ahead and come up out of that. Then the next position. We’re going to do one more exercise. We are going to be down on the ground, legs extended out in front of us.

The next exercise we’re going to do applies exercise called saw. Let’s reach both hands up initially. We’re going to take an inhale. On the exhale, we’re going to take that left hand and bring it to the opposite side of the right leg. There we go.

Slight reach forward, as far as you’re comfortable, trying to get that rotation through the rib cage, keeping the pelvis stable in front of us. On your exhale, we’re going to come up through the center and lowering down on the opposite side.

Go ahead and drop those hands to either side. Take an inhale and we are done for the day. Thank you guys so much for watching. We hope you have a great week.

Hey guys, what’s up? It’s Stephen Dunn with CORE Therapy and Pilates and today I want to making a quick announcement about some new hours that we have for our physical therapy department.

We have a brand new physical therapists, Andy, who just moved here from New York. I’ve been introducing him to people, he’s been around for now about a week, Been in town for about ten days or so. With Andy coming he is gonna not be here on Thursdays, it’s gonna be his day off, but he’s gonna be here on Saturdays. It’s gonna be the first time that we’ve had Saturday appointments for physical therapy in a long time, probably about 12 years. With me and my children Saturday is always the time that they have stuff going on, activities going on, so it’s just something that I haven’t been able to do in so long and now it’s a new service that we’re gonna have, a new time frame we’re gonna have Saturday mornings. We already have people here Saturdays doing classes, we have some Pilates classes and some GYROTONIC® classes and we also have some groups, uh excuse me, private sessions that are available but we now have some physical therapy being offered. So with that said if you’re struggling with back pain, if you’re struggling with headaches, if you’re having some shoulder problems, some knee problems? We can help you out with that, it’s something that we specialize in and see all the time. We combine manual therapy with Pilates and gyrotonic exercises and really have some some fun with helping people. So just wanted to share that today, Saturday mornings physical therapy appointments are now available and we hope to see you in here. y’all take care now… bye!

Hi, it’s Cheryl from CORE Therapy and Pilates. Today I’m here to tell you about a new thing that we’re offering at the studio it’s called the Biomat… so the biomat is a mat that you come in and you lie down on in it has far infrared rays a negative ion therapy all conducting through a pure amethyst mat.

So you’re probably wondering what does all of that mean and what does it do??? There’s so many added health benefits from using this mat, I am just going to go ahead and read a couple of them because I can’t remember them all. When you come in and use the biomat it addresses a wide range of health issues, it relieves minor aches and pains, increases blood circulation, reduces stress and fatigue, eases minor joint pain, supports your immune system, improves your sleep and reduces your inflammation. It increases tissue oxygenation and there’s many, many, many more benefits. Come in and try it out. We have 15 minute and 30 minute sessions. you just come in lie down on it. You can feel immediately the far infrared rays emitting through the mat and it helps really address the body on a cellular level…

So come in try it out we look forward to seeing you. If you have any questions stop at the front desk, ask we’ve got tons of information on it and we look forward to seeing you at the studio!

Thanks. Bye…

Call 512-215-4227 to learn more about our Biomat…

The first session is FREE!
