But what many of our neighbors in West Lake Hills and the greater Austin area don’t realize is that this incredible technology goes far beyond just one single diagnosis.

Whether you are trying to keep up your morning jogs along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, pacing yourself on the tennis courts at Westlake Country Club, or just trying to garden without a flare-up, this therapy is changing the game.

At its core, red light and near-infrared (NIR) therapy—scientifically known as photobiomodulation—is a non-invasive way to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes right at the cellular level. It’s about restoring that vital River of Life to tissues that have been starved of oxygen and blood flow.

What Is Red Light / Near-Infrared Therapy?

This therapy uses very specific wavelengths of light that act like a jump-start for tired cells. We typically utilize wavelengths in the 600 nm (red) and 800 nm (near-infrared) ranges to deeply penetrate the body’s tissues:

Red Light: Works beautifully on the surface, targeting the skin and superficial tissues.

Near-Infrared Light: Penetrates much deeper, bypassing the surface to reach your deep muscles, joints, and nerve bands.

When we apply these wavelengths correctly here in the studio, they interact with your cells’ mitochondria to produce more energy (ATP), radically reduce local inflammation, and instantly improve local circulation. The result? We “unkink the hose,” allowing faster healing and a massive reduction in pain.

What Can It Help With? (From the Greenbelt to the Reformer)

While many of our Austin patients first hear about this therapy for neuropathy, we use it successfully across a wide range of conditions to get people back to the active lifestyles they love:

Joint Pain & Arthritis: Red light therapy reduces inflammation and improves mobility in major structural anchors like the knees, shoulders, and hips—perfect for getting you back on the Barton Creek Greenbelt trails.

Tendon Injuries: Conditions like Achilles tendinitis, tennis elbow, and patellar tendon pain respond incredibly well—especially when we pair the light therapy with a targeted Pilates Reformer program.

Muscle Strains & Recovery: Whether you’re a local athlete training for the Austin Marathon or just dealing with everyday aches, this therapy speeds up muscle recovery and dramatically reduces morning soreness.

Nerve-Related Conditions: Beyond neuropathy, it supports deep nerve healing and improves overall function after a sudden compression or irritation.

Chronic Pain & Trigger Points: It’s a powerful, soothing tool for calming down irritated tissues and breaking up persistent, defensive “bracing” patterns.

Wound Healing & Circulation: By stimulating local blood flow, it accelerates tissue repair in slower-healing areas.

Why Our Austin Clients Love It

One of the biggest reasons I love introducing this to our clients is that it completely bypasses the “broken patient” mindset. It’s an empowering, gentle tool that is:

Non-invasive & 100% Drug-free

Completely Painless

Quick and easy to apply

When we combine this advanced cellular stimulation with the right physical therapy and movement approach, we see results accelerate exponentially.

The Key: Proper Clinical Application

I always tell people: not all red light therapy is created equal. Dropping a cheap online gadget into your shopping cart rarely gives you clinical results. True healing depends entirely on the right wavelengths, the correct therapeutic dosage, and targeting the root cause of your restriction—not just where it hurts, but why it hurts. That’s where our 21 years of clinical expertise makes a big difference.

Curious If It Could Help You Reclaim Your Flow?

If you’re dealing with chronic stiffness, nerve symptoms, or slow healing that’s keeping you from enjoying Lake Austin or walking the neighborhood hills, red light and near-infrared therapy might be the missing piece to your puzzle.

To help our community heal more efficiently, we’ve developed a specialized red light/laser wand and sleeve system that allows us to deliver this therapy effectively right here in our West Lake Hills clinic, or seamlessly integrate it as part of your broader home care plan.

Your body was beautifully designed to heal itself—our team is just here to help it do that better.

Stop Living with Restrictions. Let’s See If It’s Right For You.

Don’t let pain dictate your weekends in Austin. Reach out to us today to chat about how this technology works, whether it’s the right fit for your unique body, and how you can get started.

👉 [Schedule Your Movement & Light Therapy Consultation Today] 📍 Serving West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, and the Greater Austin Area since 2005.

“`

If you have ever felt a sudden, electric “zinger” down your leg, or a persistent numbness in your feet while hiking the Austin trails, you are looking at the exact biological process shown in this image.

Many people view nerves as simple, isolated electrical wires. But structurally, a nerve is far more complex—and its health is entirely dependent on your circulatory system. When that connection is interrupted, it creates a systemic “kink in the hose” that leads directly to neuropathy.

The Anatomy of a Nerve Band

Think of a major nerve like a massive fiber-optic cable running through your body. As the top half of the diagram shows, a healthy nerve is actually a tightly packed bundle of smaller nerve fibers fascicles.

Running right alongside this bundle, wrapping around it like a protective vine, is a healthy blood vessel. This vessel is responsible for delivering a constant supply of oxygen and essential nutrients to the nerve tissue. This is the River of Life in action. When blood flow is optimal, the nerve fibers can transmit signals smoothly between your brain and your limbs without any “static.”

What Happens When a Nerve is Damaged?

The bottom half of the image illustrates the cascading failure that happens during neuropathy. It almost always begins with the blood vessel, not the nerve itself.

When a blood vessel becomes diseased, compressed, or restricted due to chronic muscle tightness—such as a locked-up psoas or tight hip stabilizers—the diameter of that vessel shrinks. The flow of oxygenated blood slows to a crawl.

Deprived of oxygen, the nerve enters a state of distress. The protective myelin sheath surrounding the nerve fibers begins to wither and degrade, leaving the nerve fibers frayed and damaged. Instead of clean, efficient communication, the damaged nerve begins to misfire, sending chaotic signals to the brain. This is the exact root cause of the burning, tingling, and sharp shooting pains associated with neuropathy.

Restoring the Flow to Regenerate the Nerve

The good news is that peripheral nerves have an incredible capacity to heal—but only if you restore their lifeline. You cannot heal a damaged nerve without first fixing the diseased blood vessel supplying it.

To reverse this cycle, we must remove the mechanical pressure trapping those blood vessels. By using targeted physical therapy to decompress the joints and utilizing the structural movement of Pilates to stabilize the pelvis, we physically unkink the surrounding tissue. This reopens the pathways, allowing fresh, nutrient-rich blood flow to surge back into the nerve band, kickstarting the natural regeneration process and quieting the nervous system for good.

Are you ready to stop managing the symptoms of neuropathy and start restoring your body’s natural flow? [Schedule Your Discovery Visit in West Lake Hills Today]

You’re lying on the couch, the drugstore heating pad is cranked to “High,” and yet, that deep-seated ache in your hip or back just won’t budge. You feel a bit of surface warmth, but the moment you turn it off, the pain returns exactly as it was before.

If you feel like your current heating pad is just a “warm blanket” rather than a therapeutic tool, you aren’t imagining it. There is a scientific reason for your frustration: dry heat versus moist heat.

The Problem with “Dry Heat”

Most standard heating pads provide dry heat. While convenient, dry heat has a major limitation—it doesn’t penetrate deep into muscle tissue. Instead, it heats the surface of your skin, which often leads to a “baked” feeling rather than true relief. This is why you feel better while the pad is on, but notice no lasting change in your underlying tightness.

The “River of Life” Solution

At CORE Therapy, we talk about restoring the “River of Life” to your body. Think of your muscles and nerves like a garden hose: when they are chronically tight (especially the psoas and hip flexors), the hose gets “kinked.” This restricts blood flow and traps waste products, creating the sharp “static” or electric nerve pain many of our patients experience.

To unkink that hose, you need vasodilation—the expansion of blood vessels that brings fresh, nutrient-rich blood back to the area. Moist heat is superior here because it penetrates deeper, relaxing the “structural anchors” of your body and effectively soothing the nerves from the inside out.

Why We Recommend the Thermophore MaxHeat

We don’t endorse gadgets that sit in a closet; we only recommend tools that provide measurable results. We stand by the Thermophore MaxHeat Arthritis Pad because it solves the biggest problems with home heat therapy:

Automatic Moist Heat: It draws moisture from the air, providing the deep-penetrating benefits of moist heat without the mess of water or damp towels.

Intense, Therapeutic Temperatures: It reaches higher, safer temperatures than standard pads, offering the kind of deep-tissue relief usually reserved for clinical settings.

Weighted Coverage: Its 14″ x 27″ size is nearly twice that of standard pads, making it perfect for wrapping around your hips or covering the entire span of your spine.

If you’re ready to stop managing your pain and start restoring your mobility, the Thermophore MaxHeat is the perfect companion to your Pilates and therapy work.

Spring in Austin is a call to movement. Whether you’re training for the Cap10K, coaching youth soccer at Zilker Park, or finally hitting the Barton Creek Greenbelt after a long winter, your body is about to face a major shift in physical demand.

At CORE Therapy & Pilates, we want to make sure our West Lake Hills neighbors stay on the trails and off the sidelines. To help you prepare, Stephen Dunn (Holistic PT and Neuropathy Specialist) sat down with Alex Montoya of Pair of Specs for a deep dive into the mechanics of injury prevention.

📺 Watch the Full Deep Dive Below:

The Mechanical Anchor: Your Hip Flexors

As Alex and Stephen discuss in the video, the most critical “bridge” in your body is the hip flexor complex (the Psoas and Iliacus). After a winter of sitting, these muscles often become tight, weak, or “dormant.”

Think of your hip flexors as a mechanical anchor. When they are dysfunctional, they don’t just cause “tightness”; they create a structural kink that pulls on your lower back and alters how your nerves communicate with your legs. Strengthening these muscles is the #1 way to prevent the “phantom” pains and compensations that lead to shin splints, knee strain, and lower back flare-ups.

Don’t Ignore the “Static”

As you increase your mileage or intensity this spring, listen to your body. Are you feeling a strange heaviness or “static” in your feet? Many Austin residents spend years treating their back for these symptoms, but the root is often a mechanical failure—what Stephen calls a “supply-chain” issue where blood flow isn’t reaching the nerves.

See the Proof Before You Play

We don’t believe in guessing with your health. As showcased in our conversation with Alex, we use FLIR Thermal Imaging to map your circulation and nerve health before you hit the trail. By identifying “cold zones” or structural imbalances now, we can use a synergistic approach—including Vibration and Light Therapy—to “unkink the hose” and ensure your “River of Life” is flowing freely.

Are you Spring Ready? 🌸 Don’t wait for an injury to bench you. Schedule your Spring Movement Evaluation at our West Lake Hills clinic today.
If you have ever found yourself staring at your feet, wondering why they feel like heavy ice blocks, or why a strange, electric burning keeps you awake at night, you aren’t alone. “Why are my feet numb?” is one of the most frequent questions we hear from our neighbors in West Lake Hills and Austin.

For many, the standard answer is to “manage” the symptoms with medication. But masking the pain doesn’t answer the question of why it is happening. At CORE Therapy & Pilates, we look at it differently: Numbness isn’t just a mystery; it’s a supply-chain failure.

The Map of Your Recovery: Thermal Imaging

Because you cannot see your nerves with the naked eye, it is difficult to understand why they are failing. We use thermal FLIR imaging to turn your invisible symptoms into a clear, objective map of your circulatory health.

Blood flow is the “River of Life” for your body. It carries the heat, oxygen, and nutrients that your nerves require to survive and repair. When that supply is cut off, the nerves begin to “starve” and send out false signals of pain, tingling, or total numbness.

What the Colors Reveal on a Scan:

Vibrant Reds and Oranges: This indicates healthy circulation where oxygen-rich blood is successfully feeding your nerves.

Deep Blues and Greens: These are “cold zones” indicating sluggish circulation. Your nerves are being deprived of the fuel they need to function.

The “Black Toes” Effect: In severe cases, the temperature is so low the camera cannot register a healthy range. This “black” signature represents starving nerves in a state of crisis.

What You Feel: One Foot vs. Two

The physical sensations you experience every day often match exactly what we see on a thermal scan:

Numbness in One Foot: This often feels like one foot is a “dead weight” or an ice block while the other feels normal. This contrast creates “static” in your balance, making simple walks on Austin trails feel unstable and dangerous.

Numbness in Both Feet: This usually manifests as a symmetrical “stocking” sensation or a deep, electric burn. When both feet show “Black Toes” on a scan, it is a sign that the body’s internal supply chain is effectively offline.

Restoring the “River of Life”

The goal of our 90-Day Nerve Healing Journey is to watch those black zones disappear. We don’t use manual therapy; instead, we use a synergistic at-home protocol designed to reopen the circulatory pathways.

By utilizing Vibration Therapy to act as a mechanical pump for blood flow and Light Therapy to “recharge” your cellular batteries, we can actually watch the heat return to your feet.

When the “River of Life” is restored, the toes turn from black to red on the scan. This is physical proof that your nerves are finally being “fed” again. Once the supply chain is back online, the “static” of numbness and pain begins to quiet, allowing you to reclaim your mobility and enjoy restful, burn-free nights.

Stop wondering why your feet are numb. See the proof for yourself.

If you live in the Austin area and have been struggling with burning, tingling, or a strange numbness in your feet, you’ve likely heard the word neuropathy. You might even know it involves nerve damage. But most people don’t realize that neuropathy is rarely just a “nerve” problem—it is a supply-chain problem.

Seeing the Invisible

Because you can’t see your nerves, it’s hard to understand why they are failing. That is where thermal imaging comes in. The images at the top of this post aren’t just art; they are a map of survival. In a healthy foot, blood flow carries warmth, oxygen, and nutrients to every toe. On a thermal camera, this looks like vibrant reds and oranges.

When you see “Black Toes” on a scan, it represents a “River of Life” that has run dry. The black and deep blue areas indicate temperatures so low that the tissue is essentially starving. When nerves are deprived of oxygen-rich blood, they begin to misfire, sending those “static” signals of pain and burning to your brain.

Restoring the Flow

At CORE Therapy & Pilates in West Lake Hills, we use these scans to show our neighbors exactly where the “kinks in the hose” are located. Our 90-day Nerve Healing Journey isn’t about masking these symptoms with pills; it’s about changing the environment of the foot.

By utilizing a synergistic blend of vibration therapy to pump blood, and light therapy to “recharge” the cellular batteries, we can actually watch the heat return to the feet. As the toes transition from black to red on the camera, it’s a sign that the supply chain is back online. When the nerves are finally “fed,” the pain finally begins to quiet down.

Want to Dive Deeper?

Understanding the “why” is the first step toward reclaiming your mobility, but you don’t have to navigate the science alone. If you are tired of “managing” the pain with temporary fixes and are ready to see if your circulation can be restored, let’s get your recovery started today. Instead of wondering if your nerves can heal, let us show you the data. Contact our West Lake Hills clinic now to schedule your Nerve & Circulation Evaluation and take the first step toward turning the “River of Life” back on.

You’ve done the hard work. You’ve logged the hours on the treatment table, pushed through the initial pain, and finally received the news you’ve been waiting for: “You’re ready for discharge.”

Typically, this graduation comes with a Home Exercise Program (HEP)—a personalized roadmap of movements designed to maintain your gains, prevent re-injury, and help you return to the activities you love. But for many, the transition from the supervised care of a physical therapist to the “living room floor” is where progress stalls.

Here is why your HEP is the most important part of your recovery, and why the environment where you perform it makes all the difference.

What Exactly is an HEP?

An HEP is more than just a list of stretches. It is a clinical strategy. After formal therapy, your body is in a “maintenance and growth” phase. The goal is to ensure the strength, mobility, and pain relief you gained in the clinic are sustained through:

Consistency: Keeping the neurological pathways active.

Progression: Slowly increasing load to build resilience.

Prevention: Addressing underlying weaknesses before they become new injuries.

The Problem with “Home” and “Commercial Gyms”

While it’s called a Home Exercise Program, the reality is that most homes aren’t equipped for clinical-grade recovery.

The “Living Room” Barrier: It’s hard to focus on pelvic stability or nerve health when the dog is barking or the laundry is calling.

The “Big-Box” Intimidation: Commercial gyms are often loud, crowded, and lack the specialized equipment needed for precise post-rehab work. Using a standard weight machine when you need the nuanced resistance of a Pilates Reformer can actually be counterproductive.

The Solution: A Clinical-Grade Sanctuary

This is why we created the Post-Rehabilitation Performance & Wellness Space. We believe that your recovery deserves a dedicated environment that bridges the gap between the doctor’s office and the fitness center.

1. Precision Tools for Precise Results

Many HEPs require specific resistance and support. Our space provides independent access to:

Pilates Reformers & Chairs: For controlled, low-impact strength.

The Trap Table & Ladder Barrel: For decompression and spinal health.

Medical-Grade Treadmills: For safe gait refinement.

2. The Right “Headspace”

When you walk into our Austin area facility, your brain switches into “performance mode.” This is a space curated by Physical Therapists, meaning you are surrounded by people who value precision over ego. It’s a sanctuary designed to help you transition from “healing” to “thriving.”

3. Protecting Your Investment

You’ve already invested time and money into your physical therapy. Think of our wellness space as your insurance policy. By performing your HEP on professional equipment, you ensure that every rep is safe and every movement is effective.

Take the Next Step

Don’t let your discharge papers sit on the kitchen counter. Give your body the professional environment it deserves to stay mobile, strong, and pain-free.

Tired of the Pain Cycle? How Our Holistic Approach Offers Lasting Relief in Austin

Here in Austin and Westlake Hills, TX, we know many of you are navigating persistent pain. Perhaps it’s that nagging stiffness, a recurring twinge in your back, or the frustrating feeling that your body just isn’t moving right, no matter what you try. You’ve likely experienced a common problem: fragmented care, where symptoms are treated in isolation, leading to a frustrating cycle of temporary relief and recurring pain.

At CORE Therapy & Pilates, we believe your journey to wellness should be different. As Stephen Dunn, a Physical Therapist with over two decades of experience, alongside our exceptional team, including dual-credentialed PT/OT Andy Tseng, we founded this clinic on a profound belief: the point isn’t just to fix your pain; it’s to empower you to live a full, unburdened life.

Beyond Symptoms: Our Holistic Solution to Lasting Relief

Many approaches focus solely on the painful symptom, leading to a frustrating “revolving door” of treatments. We offer a radically different path designed to tackle the root cause and prevent recurrence. Our unique, holistic approach integrates two powerful modalities:

Expert Orthopedic Manual Therapy: Pinpointing the Source. We start with a meticulous, hands-on assessment. Our expert Physical Therapists use advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy techniques—including precise joint mobilization and myofascial release—to delve deeper than surface symptoms. We find and treat the true source of your pain, whether it’s compressed nerves causing your hand numbness or a deeply held postural dysfunction leading to chronic back pain. This isn’t about generic exercises; it’s about targeted, hands-on correction.

Clinical Pilates: Retraining for Lasting Change. Once the source of your pain is addressed, the next crucial step is ensuring it doesn’t return. This is where our Clinical Pilates comes in. Beyond simply strengthening muscles, we re-educate your entire body’s movement patterns. We help you develop new, correct biomechanics, build deep core stability, and improve overall body awareness. This functional retraining integrates your nervous system with your muscular system, making pain less likely to recur and ensuring your relief is truly lasting.

By combining the precision of manual therapy with the intelligent movement of Clinical Pilates, we empower your body to heal and then thrive. Our goal is to break your cycle of recurring pain and restore your confidence, allowing you to live the active life you desire.

The holiday season is wonderful, but let’s be honest: it’s the ultimate disruptor of routine. Those dedicated morning workouts and steady movement habits often fall victim to travel, cooking marathon sessions, and packed family schedules. Here at CORE Therapy & Pilates, we believe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice all your hard-earned progress.

The secret to moving better through the holidays isn’t finding two hours for the gym—it’s incorporating simple, intentional movement into your day.

1. The Stability Check (Before the Turkey!)

Good stability is your body’s foundation, and a strong sense of balance is your best defense against seasonal slips and falls. Before you start cooking or entertaining, take just 5 minutes to practice your balance. Try the Single-Leg Stance while you brush your teeth or wash dishes. This trains the crucial micro-muscles that stop a stumble from becoming a trip.

2. The Micro-Walk

Forget the massive post-meal slump! Instead of trying to squeeze in one long gym session, schedule three 10-minute “Micro-Walks” throughout the day: before cooking, after the meal, and before dessert. This aids digestion, keeps your joints mobile, and maintains metabolic function without requiring special planning. Get the whole family involved!

3. Kitchen Counter Push-Ups

Use the time waiting for your coffee or microwave to perform 10 Wall Push-Ups. Use the counter or wall for support. This simple strength move engages your core and strengthens the wrists and shoulders—the exact areas often injured if you were to fall. It’s an easy way to build resilience while standing still.

Ready to Reclaim Your Movement Momentum?

If it’s been a while since your last session, we want you to know the team at CORE Therapy & Pilates is here for you. Don’t let old pain points or new instabilities slow you down this season!

Whether you need a full check-up to assess your post-rehab stability, want to begin working on the balance exercises mentioned above, or are interested in starting our [Pilates Wellness Program], we are available for appointments.

Take the first step toward a strong, stable holiday season.

Hi, I’m Stephen Dunn, and as the weather cools down here in Austin and Westlake Hills, TX, we all rush to enjoy the parks, trails, and outdoor spaces we missed during the summer heat. That’s fantastic, but with the changing season, we’re already starting to see an increase in a common, yet preventable, injury: fall-related sprains and fractures in people over 45.

The combination of damp leaves, reduced visibility in the evenings, and the uneven terrain common on our beautiful trails (like the Barton Creek Greenbelt) creates a perfect storm for trips and slips. Often, the resulting injury is a wrist fracture from bracing a fall, or an ankle sprain from landing awkwardly.

Your Best Defense is Preparation

At CORE Therapy & Pilates, our goal isn’t just to fix the injury after it happens, but to equip your body to prevent it in the first place. You wouldn’t drive a car with bad brakes, so why trust a busy season to a body with weakened stability?

The best defense against a fall is a strong foundation of balance, core stability, and hip strength.

3 Ways to Fall-Proof Your Body Now

I highly encourage you to add these three types of exercises to your routine to strengthen the areas most vulnerable to fall injuries:

Balance Training: This is the most critical element. Practice the Single-Leg Stance (try closing your eyes once you feel stable!) or Heel-to-Toe Walking. This trains your body to make rapid, small corrections when you hit uneven terrain, preventing a stumble from becoming a fall.

Core and Hip Strength: Your hips stabilize you during single-leg activities like walking. Focus on exercises like Bridges and Clamshells to strengthen the glutes and hip abductors. A strong core acts as the anchor for all your movements.

Resilience Training (Bracing): Strengthen the parts used to break a fall. Simple exercises like Wall Push-Ups and using a stress ball strengthen the stabilizers in your wrists and shoulders, potentially reducing the severity of a fracture if a fall does occur.

Maintain Momentum: Our Wellness Space is Open to You!

Whether you’ve completed a therapy program with us or are just looking for a high-quality, clinical environment for your preventative training, our studio is available. We offer two great options for continued movement:
