Spring in Austin is a call to movement. Whether you’re training for the Cap10K, coaching youth soccer at Zilker Park, or finally hitting the Barton Creek Greenbelt after a long winter, your body is about to face a major shift in physical demand.

At CORE Therapy & Pilates, we want to make sure our West Lake Hills neighbors stay on the trails and off the sidelines. To help you prepare, Stephen Dunn (Holistic PT and Neuropathy Specialist) sat down with Alex Montoya of Pair of Specs for a deep dive into the mechanics of injury prevention.

📺 Watch the Full Deep Dive Below:

The Mechanical Anchor: Your Hip Flexors

As Alex and Stephen discuss in the video, the most critical “bridge” in your body is the hip flexor complex (the Psoas and Iliacus). After a winter of sitting, these muscles often become tight, weak, or “dormant.”

Think of your hip flexors as a mechanical anchor. When they are dysfunctional, they don’t just cause “tightness”; they create a structural kink that pulls on your lower back and alters how your nerves communicate with your legs. Strengthening these muscles is the #1 way to prevent the “phantom” pains and compensations that lead to shin splints, knee strain, and lower back flare-ups.

Don’t Ignore the “Static”

As you increase your mileage or intensity this spring, listen to your body. Are you feeling a strange heaviness or “static” in your feet? Many Austin residents spend years treating their back for these symptoms, but the root is often a mechanical failure—what Stephen calls a “supply-chain” issue where blood flow isn’t reaching the nerves.

See the Proof Before You Play

We don’t believe in guessing with your health. As showcased in our conversation with Alex, we use FLIR Thermal Imaging to map your circulation and nerve health before you hit the trail. By identifying “cold zones” or structural imbalances now, we can use a synergistic approach—including Vibration and Light Therapy—to “unkink the hose” and ensure your “River of Life” is flowing freely.

Are you Spring Ready? 🌸 Don’t wait for an injury to bench you. Schedule your Spring Movement Evaluation at our West Lake Hills clinic today. Let’s make sure your foundation is strong enough for everything Austin has to offer. Click here to contact us!
